High energy particles from cosmic sources

چکیده

In this review it will be attempted to briefly cover some of the recent developments in the observation of photons and neutrinos to constrain models on the origin and acceleration of cosmic rays. It appears that EGRET on board of CGRO provides most valuable new data in that context. Data from high energy airshower arrays and Tscherenkov telescopes add to the picture although not yet strong enough to really decipher the origin of cosmic rays. Searches for high energy neutrinos in underground detectors put further constraints on models in particular on possible origins of the highest energy cosmic rays. Most spectacular is the EGRET observation of a particular gamma ray burst deepening the mystery of the gamma ray burst phenomenon. Further ongoing observations of cosmic ray photons and neutrinos should get us closer to an understanding of the origin of cosmic rays.

Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays from Decaying Superheavy Particles

Decaying superheavy particles can be produced by Topological Defects or, in case they are quasistable, as relics from the early Universe. The decays of these particles can be the sources of observed Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (E ∼ 10 − 10 GeV ). The Topological Defects as the UHE CR sources are critically reviewed and cosmic necklaces and monopole-antiminopole pairs are identified as most pl...

Space Environment and Evaluation of Typical High Altitude Satellite

The space environment consists mainly of high-energy charged particles, such as protons, electrons and heavy ions. They are originating from several sources including galactic cosmic radiation, solar flares and van Allen belts. High energy electromagnetic radiation and neutrons have also been measured on spacecraft. Although shielding can reduce the effect of space radiation it cannot be elimin...

Time Delays in Cosmic Ray Propagation

Cosmic Rays (CR) travel at speeds essentially indistinguishable from the speed of light. However whilst travelling through magnetic fields, both regular and turbulent, they are delayed behind the light since they are usually charged particles and their paths are not linear. Those delays can be so long that they are an impediment to correctly identifying sources which may be variable in time. Fu...

Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays

The current status of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) is reviewed, with emphasis given to theoretical interpretation of the observed events. The galactic and extragalactic origin, in case of astrophysical sources of UHE particles, have the problems either with acceleration to the observed energies or with the fluxes and spectra. Topological defects can naturally produce particles with ene...

Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays: origin and propagation

We discuss the basic difficulties in understanding the origin of the highest energy particles in the Universe the ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECR). It is difficult to imagine the sources they are accelerated in. Because of the strong attenuation of UHECR on their propagation from the sources to us these sources should be at cosmologically short distance from us but are currently not identif...

High energy emissions from gamma-ray bursts

Gamma-ray bursts are the brightest transient sources of MeV γ-rays in the sky and are the leading candidate sources of the GZK cosmic rays. Physical conditions required to accelerate elementary particles to such high energies also, inevitably, lead to expected TeV energy γ-ray and neutrino emission from these sources. Although γ-rays of energy only up to 18 GeV have been detected from a few bur...
